What does pink salmon eat and where does it live: in the sea or in the river
Everyone knows about the benefits of red fish, but the high price of salmon forces one to pay attention to another representative of the salmon family - pink salmon. However, there may be some concern about its habitat, because marine inhabitants are more useful. From this article you will find out where pink salmon live, in what waters, what it eats, what kind of life it leads.
Where does pink salmon live?
Pink salmon is a species that belongs to the genus of Pacific salmon. She is able to migrate several thousand kilometers from her birthplace. The life cycle of these salmonids covers the sea and river periods.
Sea or river fish
Initially, this fish inhabited the Pacific and Arctic Oceans, and appeared in freshwater reservoirs for spawning. Fry hatched from eggs returned to the sea.
Did you know? In Norway, the pink salmon population is so large that it is destroyed or fed to dogs so as not to clog ponds.
This fish can only survive in cold waters, temperatures above +25° C leads to her death.
Pink salmon came to Norway in the 60s of the last century, where it densely occupied the rivers. The reason for its appearance was the work of the Soviet Union on the resettlement of these salmonids to the shores of the Kola Peninsula. In this country, fish are considered alien and are not caught for the purpose of eating. Norwegians fear that its appearance will cause serious harm to the region’s ecosystem, especially considering that after spawning, decayed remains are everywhere.
Where is found in Russia
In Russia, this species of salmonids covers the region of the coast of Siberia in the region from the Lena River to the Peter the Great Bay, the Commander Islands, the Kuril Islands, and the Sakhalin Peninsula. At the end of the first half of the twentieth century. attempts were made to acclimatize pink salmon in the coastal waters of the Murmansk region, the result was its distribution throughout the Kola Peninsula.
In Russia, fish is considered valuable, despite some dry meat compared to other Pacific salmon.
What does pink salmon eat
Did you know? The ability of pink salmon to find the river in which it was born among the open spaces of the sea has not yet been solved by scientists.
In the period from June to August, salmon that have reached the age of two are sent to the rivers in which they themselves once hatched. Their path can last up to several thousand kilometers, and this migration is called homing. Before the breeding season, this species of salmon is painted silver with dark spots on the caudal fin, small teeth in the mouth.
With the onset of spawning, the jaws become longer in shape resembling the beak of predatory birds. The body becomes flattened from the sides, the male becomes humpback, which became the reason for this name of the species.
Jaws, palate and tongue are surrounded by hook-shaped teeth. Dark spots appear on thickened skin, silver color changes to dark brown on the back, black on the head and fins, white in the abdomen. Small scales become almost invisible. The meat loses its taste and elasticity, fat deposits are reduced, muscle wateriness is acquired. The functions of the liver in the production of bile and the gastrointestinal tract for the production of digestive enzymes cease.
With the help of a tail fin, a female digs furrows at the bottom, raking stones, and lays there a large pale yellow caviar in an amount of up to 1,500 pieces. If there are several males near her, they can fight for the right to fertilize eggs. Not all of them get milk, some will be washed away by the current. At this moment, other fish that feed on caviar become enemies.
After the end of the process, the female with tail fin covers the furrows with a mound of pebbles. After 110–130 days, the larvae hatch, which will remain there until spring. Then the silver-colored fry rush into the ocean. Not everyone succeeds in surviving; more than half will be eaten by birds and aquatic predators. Spawning, pink salmon die immediately after the completion of the process or towards the mouth. Dead fish becomes prey for animals, ravens, gulls. That is, her life expectancy is 2 years.
Important! Such a life cycle leads to an increased accumulation of fish in some areas in even years, in others - in odd years.
Thus, pink salmon belongs to the salmon family and is a valuable commercial fish. It can be caught in the sea or in the river, which means that you can have both a marine and a river specimen on your table. However, in the body of river fish, visible changes and a deterioration in the taste of meat occur, therefore it is better to eat the one that lives in the sea.
