Dates and other features of pink salmon spawning
Spawning is the process of mating fish by fertilization and throwing eggs. Before the onset of the suitable season, red fish from the seas swim into the rivers, where more suitable conditions for spawning.
When pink salmon spawn and its habitat
Among all representatives of the salmon family, pink salmon are least inclined to be close to their place of birth, because the habitat is wide. Basically, the natural habitat of these representatives of the aquatic fauna consists of the coastal zone of the Pacific, and occasionally reaches the water area and the Arctic Ocean.
In Russia, pink salmon is more common in Primorye, and during spawning, in the Lena River, on Sakhalin and Kamchatka. Before this fish begins to spawn, it is forced to cover a long distance.
Important! Fishing during spawning is strictly prohibited. In this case, fishing can begin immediately after the end of this process, when it goes along the rivers back to the sea.
This is explained by the fact that pink salmon constantly lives in the salty waters of the sea, and selects freshwater ponds for spawning. Reaching adulthood, in the spring, salmon swim north in search of places where rivers flow into the ocean. In May, the process of throwing caviar begins, which ends only in early autumn.
In the middle lane
There are no pink salmon in the middle zone of the Russian Federation. Despite the fact that on the territory of Russia you can meet 5 representatives of the salmon family, not one of them lives outside of Primorye and the eastern part of Siberia. This is due to the fact that they prefer to live in the coastal zones of the ocean. During spawning, pink salmon seeks fresh water, but it does not go deep into the mainland.
There is no season on the Kamchatka Peninsula during which fishing for any member of the salmon family would be unsuccessful. The peak of their number occurs in late spring and summer, when the active phase of spawning occurs. Most of the pink salmon during this period is found in the Kamchatka River. Red fish from all the coastal regions of the peninsula flock from the Pacific Ocean to this freshwater body of water.
Did you know? On the Lena River, where pink salmon are spawning, there is one of the main natural attractions of the Far East - Lena Pillars. This geological formation looks similar to the Wall from the series “Game of Thrones”, because film fans often visit the Yakut miracle.
In the Far East
The Far Eastern District is favorably located at the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan, into which several large freshwater rivers flow. It is in these reservoirs that salmon from the ocean go during spawning. The largest number of fish in the Amur River occurs at the end of June and all of July.
Red fish visits the largest island of the Russian Federation at the same time as the Far East - in the middle of summer. The spawning period is limited to equal periods due to identical climatic conditions. A large number of these representatives of the salmon family are found all year around Sakhalin. During spawning, fish from the two seas enter the rivers of the island at once: from Japan in the west and Okhotsk in the east.
Did you know? The catch of pink salmon in the protected areas of Kamchatka is prohibited not only for its preservation, but also because there is a unique fauna. In this regard, 6 parks of the peninsula were included in the UNESCO heritage list.
Signs of pink salmon with caviar
This red fish is usually caught in those moments when it is either just starting, or already finishing spawning. This means that almost any female carcass contains caviar. To distinguish such a fish from a male is simple: it has not a dark, but a plain gray color, the forms are smoother, and the head is less pointed.
In general terms, the female does not look so predatory, how much smooth and graceful. The presence of caviar in her is often indicated by a pink color of the belly. The male, during spawning, apparently transforms outwardly: the carcass and jaw are strongly bent.
How many times a year spawns and at what age
Pink salmon reaches maturity at the age of 2-3 years. From that moment on, she spawns periodically. Spawning occurs infrequently: due to the natural cycle of the body of these marine animals, eggs spawn every 2 years. It is for this reason that the catch and quantity of pink salmon in fresh water generally fluctuates annually. So, in odd years, there are much more fish in rivers than in even ones.
When spawning ends and what happens to fish after it
The vast majority of pink salmon males after spawning simply die due to changes in their bodies. External transformations are only the result of a sharp decrease in the amount of fat in the muscles, which leads to sagging meat. The gastrointestinal tract shrinks, and enzymes for the proper functioning of the digestion cease to be produced.
The combination of these factors leads to the inevitable death of spawning fish. After spawning, caviar remains in the bottom soil, and the females return to salt water: they can mate with other males after 2 years, and if they are lucky, more than once.
Legislative bans on fish spawning
The legislation on catching fish products in the Russian Federation is regional in nature. For example, in Sakhalin, in some parts of the rivers, pink salmon can be caught using nets on a paid basis: the fee depends on the amount of catch. But in most areas of the island, fishing is strictly prohibited by law. First of all, fishing is not allowed within the reserves, as well as near such buildings as bridges or dams.
Important! Cards are specially drawn up for fishermen, on which it is marked where it is impossible to catch fish. They can be found publicly available on the Internet.
According to the laws of Siberia and the Far Eastern District, salmon fishing is possible using fishing rods with a predetermined number of hooks and nets. For such fishing, you must obtain a license, and assign a unique number to your fishing equipment.
Thus, pink salmon is a commercial fish with a unique life cycle. Its quantity in fresh water reservoirs fluctuates every year. Spawning is often accompanied by subsequent death of individuals, because in some parts of the rivers for fishermen there is an opportunity to catch a lot of seafood.
